Make Vegan Schnitzel at Home

The schnitzel, a delicious dish of fried breaded meat cutlets, has been in European cuisine since the medieval times, but this scrumptious dish has become veganized in recent years. You might even see this dish served in some European vegan cruises.

In the world of vegan dishes, plant-based meat alternatives are the way to go if we want to savor great dishes without compromising your convictions. And since schnitzel happens to be one of my favorite dishes, I thought I would share my experience with some of the best options out there! These three recipes will show you how easy it is to recreate the food you love at home.

Vegan Schnitzel by Vegan on Board

This recipe uses celeriac slices as the ‘patty’ or base for the vegan schnitzel. It doesn’t attempt to imitate the flavor of the original but it has a unique, savory flavor and has a light, tender texture of its own. But if celeriac isn’t available, you can use whatever base you like: aubergines, mushrooms, tofu, cauliflower,  or seitan.

The EdgyVeg’s Vegan Schnitzel

Seitan is the star of the show. It gives a soft, fibre-like texture and can be flexible for any flavor you want, just switch up the seasoning! And for me, it’s the most schnitzel-looking schnitzel among all three recipes.

Rahmschnitzel: Austrian Sour Cream Schnitzel by One Green Planet

Here’s a tangy twist to your usual breaded cutlet: pour sour cream sauce all over it! This vegan rendition of a well-loved Austrian dish is high in protein and rich in taste, thanks to the harmonious combination of tempeh, mushrooms, and soy milk as cream substitute.
