Tips For Instagram-Worthy Cruise Photos

One great reason to go on our gay vegan cruises? For one thing, it’s going to be an incredibly Instagrammable experience. With luxurious and modern boat accommodations, excellent vegan cuisine, and rarely visited but culturally-rich tour destinations, you’ll definitely want  to immortalize every single moment.

But how can capture the beauty of your experience well into your phone or camera so that you can share it with everybody on Instagram? We’ve got some easy tips to keep in mind.

1 - Apply the Rule of Thirds

One of the most basic and go-to reference for many photographers -- both amateur and professional -- is the Rule of Thirds. It simply means separating the frame into three columns and three rows, and placing the subject in a position in such a way that the entire visual composition appears asymmetrical.

This is very helpful for taking portrait shots of your friends and travel buddies as it draws the viewer’s attention on one side, instead of looking immediately at the center.

2 - Make Use of Negative Space

“Negative space” here refers to the space surrounding the subject/s of a photo. If you want to capture lovely sceneries featuring subjects in the photo, smartly using the negative space to your advantage is key.

Instead of placing your subject/s dead at the center of the image or having them take up the majority of the space, place them at the bottom left or right and let the view steal the show.

3 - Explore Exposure Options

Have you ever taken a photo that was too bright and ended up washing all of the beautiful details over with white light? That’s a sign of overexposure and can be difficult to fix even on the most sophisticated photo editing application. With that, make sure you set your exposure properly before taking a photo.

With phone cameras, this can typically be done by tapping on a bright area of the screen to allow your camera to adjust the brightness it captures. Note that it is easier to edit a darker photo than an overexposed one.

4 - Check Out Photo Editor Applications

Speaking of editing photos, don’t be afraid to experiment with post processing your images. You can try out editing applications such as Photoshop Express or Snapseed. You can also adjust your photos on Instagram, making use of these different options:

Brightness - To brighten/darken the photo overall
Contrast -  To increase/decrease the contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the image
Highlights - To lighten/darken the bright parts of the image
Shadows - To lighten/darken the dark parts of the image

Simply swipe towards the left or right to adjust accordingly. Ensure it appears similar to how the scene would look in real life. Notice how the shadows and highlights seem natural.

5 - Bring Out the Colors

If there’s one thing that can breathe life into the scene you’re trying to capture, it’s colors. Colors are prone to appearing less vibrant in photos, which is why bringing them out during the editing process is helpful. Remember that the goal here is to make the colors really pop, so be careful not to oversaturate them.

Most photo editing apps offer two choices: vibrance and saturation. For all around more vivid colors, enhance the image’s vibrance so that the more muted colors are brought out without adding unnecessary saturation which can make a photo look orange/yellow/green. If the image appears to cool looking, however, you can enhance saturation a little bit.

These are just some of the many tips and tricks you can make use of when taking that next feed-worthy photo. It’s up to you to explore other possibilities by practicing taking photos and editing them yourself. You’ll be ready to snap those photos by the time you set sail with Vegan Culinary Cruises.
