Living Sustainably in a World of Consumerism

We’re already at the height of global warming and natural disasters. By the start of the new decade, it showed its first response with the evident casualties that such calamities have caused millions of people.

We have also witnessed the gore and inhumane activities that were kept secret by certain countries that caused the widespread SARS-like virus that infected millions. The alarming response of mother earth is pleading us to change our habits and replace it with a mindset that’s bound to sustain nature’s resources for the generations to come.

How You Can Begin Living a Sustainable Life

Eat Live Food

Incorporating healthy habits such as a plant-based diet isn’t only contributing to global impact but is also changing your body, mind, and soul. Opting for plant-based, vegetarian, or vegan cuisine can simply make your body look physically younger, your mind clear of unblocked creative energies, and your soul recharged with good exuberance. Consume more live food (such as greens, beans and vegetables) and you will see the physical and mental changes in due time.

Say Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic

There are other things that may be more complicated to reuse, such as hygienic products, but that doesn’t mean you can’t minimize your plastic waste. Learn to live lightly and avoid single use containers for a start. It may not seem like much, but this single step can change a lot.

Consume Less

Being able to afford something isn’t a reason to patronize endless consumerism. Before you buy something, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you really need it?
  • Can it be borrowed from close friends/family?
  • How can you utilize it?
  • Does it improve your wellbeing/skills/talents/health?
By asking yourself these questions before every purchase, you perform mindfulness -- a technique used by great zen masters in living abundantly with less.

Diverting to a sustainable lifestyle isn’t just “for the show.” Additionally, your belief in what you do matters in order to be able to persevere and continually contribute well to others and the environment.

Converting to a vegan lifestyle is the primary step that most advocates start with. Start your journey by going on a vegan travel tour such as a vegan culinary cruise, or an escapade to vegan capitals of the world. You’ll surely realize that a sustainable, healthy lifestyle isn’t just possible, but also gratifying, fun, and satisfying.
